We've played it at two players and at four, and it scales really well either way. The guardian powers combo nicely with the rune dice, so there's actual strategy rather than just luck. Only gripe is setup takes a few minutes with all the tokens.
Brought this to game night with three friends and we lost our first round spectacularly, which somehow made us want to play again immediately. The guardian powers combo really well with the rune dice, so each turn feels like you're actually solving a puzzle together rather than just rolling and hopi
I grabbed this for solo play since my group rarely gets together, and the rune guardian abilities give each character a distinct feel. Rolling dice to chain rune powers against the encroaching threat kept me tense right up to the last turn.
