Quick Answer
Death Saves: War of Dragons Box Set 1 is a great choice for D&D groups and collectors who want eight high-quality, pre-painted miniatures to expand their fantasy adventures. It's ready to use right out of the box, so you can skip the painting and get straight to gaming.
Why This Box Set Stands Out
This set is part of the Death Saves line from WizKids, known for producing durable, pre-painted miniatures that are ready for play. The War of Dragons Box Set 1 includes eight unique characters, each with its own look and personality, which can add variety to your encounters without needing to buy multiple packs.
Because the miniatures come pre-assembled and pre-painted, they save you time and effort. You can use them immediately in your campaign, whether you're a dungeon master stocking a dragon-themed adventure or a player wanting a distinctive character figure.
Consider the Trade-Offs
While the set offers great convenience, it's not for everyone. If you enjoy painting miniatures as a hobby, these pre-painted figures won't give you that creative outlet. Also, the set includes specific named characters from the Death Saves world, so if you're looking for generic dragon-themed minis like standard dragonborn or drakes, these might not fit your needs perfectly.
Another point to consider is the price. At $23.99 with a comparison price of $39.99, you're getting a discount, but it's still an investment. If you only need one or two of the characters, buying the full set might be more than you want to spend.
Decision Rules for Buying This Set
- Buy if you want ready-to-play minis: If you prefer to spend your time playing rather than painting or assembling, this set is a solid pick. The pre-painted figures are ready to hit the table immediately.
- Consider if you need named characters: The set includes specific characters like Maeglin and Stormhallow. If your campaign needs these named figures, it's a great fit. If you need generic dragon-themed enemies, you might look elsewhere. Check the character list to see if they match your campaign's needs.
- Skip if you prefer unpainted minis: If painting is part of your hobby, this set's pre-painted finish won't give you that creative outlet. Look for unpainted miniatures instead.
- Weigh the price per mini: At $23.99 for eight minis, you're paying about $3 per figure, which is reasonable for pre-painted quality. But if you only want one or two characters, buying singles might be more cost-effective. Calculate your per-mini cost and compare with single purchases.
