The fortification rules really reward turtling up behind walls while your neighbors tear each other apart, and I've already lost two evenings to "just one more clan." Mercenary companies switching sides mid-campaign kept me from ever feeling safe, which is exactly what I wanted.
The way each mercenary company dissolves into its own little fiefdom after the empire collapses is such a clever setup, and the fortification tiles make every border feel genuinely tense. We finished our first three-player game in about ninety minutes and immediately set it up again.
